With all the floods that have hit around the country lately it won’t be long before flood damaged cars will hit the market. Should you consider buying a flood damaged car if you can get a great deal? Our advice is to stay clear of cars that have been damaged in a flood. Here are some reasons why from our friends at Carfax
Flooding can seriously damage a car. Electrical and computer systems are particularly vulnerable, and this can affect the lights, windshield wipers and locks. It can also cause airbags and anti-lock braking systems to malfunction.
This can lead to serious safety issues, particularly if you are involved in a crash.
If you unwittingly buy a car which has been previously flooded you may lose out financially too, owing to large, unexpected repair bills and a low resale value.
So not only do you risk of buying a car with electrical and computer problems which can be hard to diagnosis and fix, you also put yourself and others at risk from safety issues that will only be revealed in a crash.
Tell-tale Signs of Flooding
- A musty odor in the interior, which can sometimes be covered with a strong air-freshener
- Upholstery or carpeting which doesn’t match, is loose, new or stained
- Damp carpets
- Rust around doors, inside the hood and trunk latches, pedals or under the dashboard
- Mud or silt in the glove compartment or under seats
- Brittle wires under the dashboard
- Fog or moisture beads in the interior or exterior lights or instrument panel
The North Carolina Attorney Genrals office states that a flood damaged car must be disclosed in writing before the car is sold. The punishment for selling a car without this disclosure is a class 2 misdemeanor with a $5000.00 fine per violation. Here is some additional information to look out for from the North Carolina’s Attorney General’s Office regarding flood damaged cars.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, it’s illegal for a car to be sold without the seller disclosing it’s been damaged due to flood water. The office also released the following tips for consumers.
- Ask to see the title of any used car. Check the date and place of transfer to see if the vehicle comes from a state that recently experienced flooding. Keep in mind that the title will only indicate flood damage if the insurance company officially totaled the car. Also, consider checking a vehicle’s history with a service such as CARFAX.
- Ask the seller directly whether or not the car has been damaged in any way, including by water or storms.
- Have the car examined by an independent mechanic of your choice before you buy it.

I found this interesting article about researchers at Audi, who have managed to create a synthetic gasoline. Audi in partnership with a French firm called Global Bioenergies have produced a synthetic fuel you may be able to run in your engine. It is called “E-Benzin” and according to Car and Driver it has no sulfur or benzene contaminants, making it a clean burning fuel. The two companies have already produced synthetic natural gas and synthetic diesel and have now developed a synthetic gasoline. Rather than moving away from the combustible engine Audi has been working on a clean burning fuel that can be used fuel these type of engines. Researchers report that they are working on modifying the fuel, so that it is made from nothing but water, hydrogen, sunlight and carbon dioxide. While you probably won’t see this at the pump any time soon, Audi and Global Bioenergies plan to build a plant in Germany to begin producing larger quantities of the synthetic fuel by 2016.
Researchers at Audi have managed to do something that at first blush sounds impossible, or at least, highly illogical: They’ve created a small batch of synthetic gasoline without using any petroleum whatsoever. And they’re working to tweak the process so they can create the fuel using nothing but water, hydrogen, sunlight, and carbon dioxide. Audi’sAudi Makes Synthetic Gasoline Using Zero Petroleum

There seems to be a lot of people online talking about the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. What’s all the fuss about? Well for one thing, it is to be the weight of the car, 200 pounds lighter than the 2015 model. Next of course, comes the speed of the car. According to GM the Camaro will go from 0 to 60 in less than six seconds. How much less than six seconds will be interesting to find out considering that the Camaro’s nemesis, the Ford Mustang, can also go from 0 to 60 in less than six seconds. According to Car and Driver the Ecoboost Mustang went from 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds. Will the turbocharged 2016 Camaro be able to do the same? We would sure like to find out. Another interesting new feature of the 2016 Camaro is that it now sits on the recently new GM’s Alpha architecture. Not familiar with the Alpha architecture? If there is one thing that will help you get the best deal when shopping for a new or used car is Research. In fact it’s all about the research. The question is what research do you need? Before you ever go to look at cars you want to decide what type of car is going to fit your lifestyle and what type of car is going to fit your budget. When it comes to cost, you need to think about insurance cost for the particular car you have chosen. What about fuel cost for the year? What good is having a car you can’t afford to drive?
Once you have decided on the type of car you want, the next step in the research game is financing. Before you ever go to look for a car you need to know what you can afford and who will give you the best lending rates. Of course, cash gives you more leverage in negotiation if you have that option. Once you know how much money is available and who has the best rates, you can then consider what the dealership has in financing. If they offer a better rate then of course go with them. Having a better credit rating usually means you will have a better interest rate to select from.
And More Research
Another area that research will be of benefit for you in purchasing a car is discovering the actual true market value of the vehicle. Sites like Edmonds.com and Kelly Blue book can provide you with an idea of what the car maybe selling for in your area. You may pay a little more at the dealership than you would from “for sale by owner”, but you will not get the peace of mind that comes with purchasing a pre-certified car.
